Card Marketing covers a broad, diversified market with products
that include credit cards, debit cards, smart cards, co-brand and
secured cards, as well as membership products. This year may be
a transition period for credit cards as wireless access, smart cards,
and new legislation begin to take hold.
MARKETING METHODS
Credit card acquisition and retention programs are marketed in a
variety of ways, includ-ing direct and statement mailers, telemarketing,
and voice messaging. These programs are utilized by a variety of
card issuers including prime, sub prime, co-brand, debit, private
label, and affinity. One constant for all of these programs is the
need to increase share, while establishing retention through increased
customer loyalty.
SOME FACTS AND FIGURES
According to the Auriemma Consulting Group, 83% of people surveyed
say there is more competition in credit cards in the last five years.
14% say there is the same amount of competition.
Seven out of ten consumers own more than one loyalty card and the
market will continue to grow at double-digit rates.
An annual American Express consumer survey conducted in early 2000
found that 54% of respondents feel it is acceptable to pay for purchases
under $20 with a credit card, up from 45% one year earlier.
More than $1 billion is spent on card-based advertising programs
annually.
There are more than 500 card-issuing companies making more than
300 billion inbound and 50 million hours of outbound calls each
year.
Per recent studies by the DMA, adults who have the most credit
cards tend to receive the most standard mail Over 12 pieces
on average, every week.
The DMA has found that the highest response rates come from those
